Mystery of the Cross Part 4 of 4

He came down the stairs unconsciously forming a plan in his mind.  He wouldn't be able to live with himself if something happened to Emily too.  In the living room he could make out a small figure hovering above the couch where Emily should be.  In a desperate effort to confuse the killer, he switched on the lights.
A bright burst of light entered into the cabin.  Without any hesitation, barely adjusting to the light himself, he saw his shot and took it.  He watched the killer loosen the grip around Emily’s neck and fall to the floor.  Thomas rushed to Emily and sat her up, as she gasped for breath.
”He was mine.”  The killer’s words drifted into Emily’s ears like soft deadly whispers.  Instantly she recognized the voice and tried to piece things together.  She pulled off the knit mask that hid her face.
“Why Liz?”  Liz began to cough now, blood trickled out of one of her nostrils.  Both Thomas and Emily didn’t notice the knife still clutched in her hands.  In one last burst of dying energy, Liz tried to plunge the knife into Emily.  Emily cried out with the expectation of pain, but Liz’s energy fizzled like a flame in an airtight jar.  Emily took the knife out of Liz’s hands and skidded it across the floor.  Thomas looked down at Liz.  Anne’s cross necklace around her neck.  The unspoken question remained on his lips.  He searched her dead eyes for answers, but found none.
